This is an exciting opportunity to visit a school using the Singapore Maths No Problem! Textbooks, as trialled in the Maths Hubs NCETM national project.
The aim of the session is to introduce participants to the textbook material and lesson structure and to see how these support our approach to teaching for mastery. A useful session for those who are looking to use this approach in their schools as well as those looking at of some of the key techniques being used to develop a mastery curriculum, developing pupils’ mathematical ability and confidence without having to resort to memorising procedures to pass tests – making mathematics more engaging and interesting.
As well as visiting a class within our school using the textbook material, time will be spent both before and after discussing and understanding the Singapore approach using the Maths – No Problem! Material, with a view to developing an approach of teaching towards mastery. There will also be opportunities to speak to the teacher involved in teaching the session observed and ask any questions
- Participants will evaluate how the textbook material contributes to children’s deeper conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts and teaching for mastery. In particular:
- use of textbook material to support whole class teaching
- The use of concrete and visual representations
- The use of variation and making generalisations from examples
